Under the new system students will be working towards an Ebacc, of which will consist of the three core subjects Maths, English and Science which would later be widened to include a language, geography and history but not any art subjects. The government still insist that students will be able to study arts subjects but without them counting towards the final Ebacc grade there are fears that schools will withdraw subjects such as art, music and perfrming arts from their curriculum in favour of those counting towards the Ebacc.  </p> <p><br/>Even my own experience in education where art was compulsory until the age of 14 and afterwards was available to be studied as a art of GCSES where every grade from every subject counted at the end of the year was filled with prejudice against the arts. I attended a state school in Warwick called Myton who was in the top 50 schools list in the UK. This obsession with the list and remaining within the list took priority over the needs of the actual students. It was common practice for students to have their subjects chosen for them in a bid to keep grades high and the school keeping their standards. Many students were unable to study a GCSE language as a result of the school&#8217;s fear of them failing and therefore pulling the school out of the top 50 list. I myself originally chose geography and art to study for GCSE in order to appease my parents who had been pressured by my school for me to study a more “academic” subject, secretly switching to drama a couple of weeks into the subject. After decided to change sixthform to the more art orientated Binswood I was often ridiculed by teachers for my choice in chosing an art career and was often told I would get nowhere in life and that I was wasting my time.<br/><br/>In reality was I? Four years later I am living in London having recently passed my Photographic Arts degree and am looking forward to my future as a working artist. Whilst I know the road to becoming a successful artist is hard, I am pleased with the number of exhibitions and screenings of my work I have had already and the growing amount of fans of my work whilst many of my peers at Myton have, to say it bluntly, done nothing with their lives. The reason being that I stuck to my guns and decided to persue something I knew was best for me rather than what the school wanted to appear was best for me. Whilst many schools and the Conservative government would make out that arts are a soft subject without any merit in the real world the reality couldn&#8217;t be anymore different. We live in a world shaped by the arts. The buildings around us, the clothes we wear, the newspapers and magazines we read, the advertisements we read on the tube, the music we hear on the radio; all are a result of the arts. Those who study arts are not always angsty young artists venting out their rage by splatting paint on a canvas, they are the people who shape society and make it work. And regardless of this, could you imagine what society would be like without galleries, museums, music, theatres and the like? We would be reduced to a nation who&#8217;s only purpose in life is to eat, sleep and work. <br/><br/>The opinion that artists cannot read or do maths is also a false one. I ended up receiving As for my English and Science GCSEs and a B for my maths one. I find it very bizarre that many people hold this view as the majority of any art subject consists of a huge part of research and writing for which the obvious skills are needed. My GCSE drama qualification consisted of examinging and analysing many segements of scripts, detailing the reason behind the writing and analysing the different ways to act the piece out in essays that remarkably resembled the analysation of Shakespere plays that GCSE English covers. My Photgraphic Arts degree required researching into many different aspects of socoiology, psychology, history and various theories which were then channelled into essays. The fact that all art degrees require this level of researching, reading and writing shows that artists have a high level of English skill. I would even go as far to say that by taking away the emphasis on art subjects that the English subject itself would suffer as English as a subject is an arts subject itself and requires the creativity and imagination that art subjects can help to fuel in a student. In a nation where schooling is pushed my league tables and the priorities of the student are undermined I feel this move is very dangerous in how the younger generation will turn out in adult life. <br/><br/>The government is going about the complete wrong way in attempting to make the standerd of reading, writing and numerical skills higher in this country. GCSE age is too late to attempt to rectify those who have poor skill in these areas and by forcing them to do subjects they feel they have no confidence in will result in a nation with low self esteem and frustrated that the system has failed them. Research has shown that those who have not learnt to read or write at primary school are more likely to get involved with crime and misbehave at secondary school which would therefore point in the direction of putting more emphasis on education at a primary school level for all subjects, including english, maths, science, the arts, languages and humanities. If the government wants to compete with Europe&#8217;s educational system maybe we should take a leaf out of their book and teach out youth foreign languages at a young age as well as ensuring that every student can read and write as they leave to go to secondary school. By taking focus away from the arts we are heading towards the collapse of society, where the younger generation has no confidence or will turn to crime and our nation which is considered a height of creativity and epicentre of art will fall from grace.<br/><br/>If you agree with my rambles and rants then please sign this petition, for the future of all artists and society itself.
